Since 2018, Donevan has been documenting some of the happiest moments in people’s lives through his photography business (Erin Leydon)
HOW DID YOU INTEREST IN ACCOUNTING?
A high school teacher inspired me to take an interest in accounting. She was a CPA, but she also taught and eventually became a school principal. I found it very interesting that she chose a career that would open doors for others.
My father was an artist. He felt that he never had “good” as an artist, so he kind of pushed me towards a more standard career. But I always had a creative side that I wanted to nurture.
WHEN DID PHOTOGRAPHY BECOME MORE CENTRAL?
I started taking photography seriously in 2014, when I was on maternity leave with my first child and had to adjust to being a full-time mom. I needed to do something that was unrelated to my mother.
I started doing a challenge where I took a photo every day for a year and uploaded them. Soon friends asked me to take pictures of their families and word of mouth grew from there.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Capturing moments is more important to me than taking a pretty picture. My daughter was my first major subject because I wanted to remember those fleeting little moments of her childhood.
Portrait photography attracts me because I love working with and getting to know other people. Even though I work alone, meeting and talking with the people I photograph means that the work doesn’t get lonely.
HOW DO YOUR CPA SKILLS LOVE YOU?
As a business owner, I always have to take care of everything and be able to balance the books. My accounting background really keeps me organized. Plus I can do my own taxes!
