New research has revealed that Princess Diana’s wedding dress is the third most influential royal wedding dress of all time, despite it being 40 years since she married Prince Charles.
Coming first, as the most searched dress in 2021 is Meghan Markle‘s dress, which attracts 51,000 Google searches per month.
Her dress was a custom-made Givenchy dress by Claire Waight Keller and has more than four times the monthly searches for the second most popular dress.
The research, by Geek Wealth calculates global monthly Google searches, for wedding dresses from fifteen of the most popular royal weddings since King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, to see which was the world’s favourite.
Kate Middleton is the Royal with the second most popular wedding dress, with 47,000 average monthly searches worldwide for her Alexander McQueen dress, designed by Sarah Burton from 2011.
In third place is Princess Diana, who averages 30,000 monthly global searches for her dress, forty years after the wedding in 1981. The wedding itself still has a monthly global search count of 21,000.
Princess Beatrice also has one of the most popular royal wedding dresses of all time. The princess garners 8,200 Google searches a month worldwide for her dress which she borrowed from the Queen, making it the fourth most popular royal wedding dress on the list.
Queen Elizabeth II reigns as having the fifth most popular royal wedding dress on the list – despite the wedding to Prince Philip taking place 74 years ago. The dress designed by Norman Hartnell cost £30,000 in 1947, the equivalent of £1.2million today.
A spokesperson for Geek Wealth said: “Meghan Markle has been a fashion icon since she was catapulted onto the world stage when news of her romance with Prince Harry broke in 2016.
“The enduring popularity of her wedding dress, despite the wedding taking place almost four years ago, is a testament to the Duchess’ effortlessly elegant and timeless style.
“Although she has stepped down from her official role as an active royal, this study highlights her unwavering ability to keep the world’s attention on her, not only through her actions but also through her iconic style.”
